The Friends of Rippey hosted the Churdan Town and Country Band in a fundraiser for the Greene County Freedom Rock on Saturday evening Aug. 13. There was a cool breeze, and the threat of rain vanished as the band played familiar tunes.
The event was well attended, with about 75 persons bringing their lawn chairs and setting up on the lawn in front of the library/community room.
The band played familiar tunes in the shade of the Rolling Hills Bank. One of the most enjoyable was a reading done by Jeff Lamoureux using the words of Gen Douglas McArthur on “Duty, Honor, Country” with the band playing background music.
Ice cream was served by the Friends of Rippey, along with sweets provided by the veterans of Greene County. Don Ihnken provided information about the rock and photos of it were passed around for all to see. It is very big rock and will be moved to the permanent site between the former Milligan Grain elevator and the Milwaukee depot in Jefferson. The audience was surprised to learn the rock will be painted in October of 2016, rather than April of 2017.
When the band played the tunes associated with the branches of the military, Greene County veterans were asked to come forward during the military salute. Rippey veterans included LaVere Derry, Dennis Ulrich, Gary Schmidt, Garry Higgins, Gary Weaver, Jack Lint, and Dan Brubaker from the Army, Mike Scharingson, from the Air Force and Phil Roberts, from the National Guard.
An army helmet was circulated through the crowd, in a pass the hat gesture that resulted in $850 for the painting of the Freedom Rock.

Librarian Katrina Buttler reports it was a quite week at the library but staff is getting ready for school, the book club and a movie night.
To celebrate the start of school, the library will show a “Movie in the Grass” on the library lawn Friday, Aug. 26, at 8:45 pm. Staff and the library board will show “The Angry Birds Movie” and serve popcorn at no charge. Bring blankets, chairs, bug spray and family friendly drinks and enjoy a fun night with the kids. (All children must be supervised.) Book club will start Sept. 1. The first book will be Mudbound by Hillary Jordan. Tuesday, August 23, Ellen Johnston will speak to the group about her experiences as a teacher in other countries. All are welcome to hear her speak at 10 am.
Rally Day, Aug. 28 – The Rippey Methodist Church is celebrating rally Sunday, Aug. 28. We are focusing on “pumping up” the whole church, this being a little different as we usually focus on the children’s Sunday school. It will be a church service that will involve the congregation and provide up-lifting music! We are looking forward to a year of spiritual growth in our church!

Local friends have been notified of the death of a Rippey High School alumnus from the class of 1953. Marilyn Correy Friel Church, 81, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 10, 2016 at Taylor House Hospice in Des Moines.
Marilyn was born May 9, 1935 in Cooper to Irwin and Ethel Correy. She had been a member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Des Moines since 1961. Marilyn enjoyed painting, sketching, reading and puzzles.
Marilyn is survived by her sons Mark Friel, David (Kim) Church, Andrew (Stephanie) Church and Brian (Marcia) Church; daughter Catherine Blaskovich; 16 grandchildren; siblings Norma Schlarbaum, Mahlon Correy and Janice Correy; and many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Bardole family reunion: The Paul and Mary Bardole family traveled to Utica, IL, for a special weekend August 5-7. Some of the cousins haven’t seen each other in more than 9 years!
We rented a “big cabin” that slept 13+ and that is where we gathered to eat. The other two villas slept 9-10 each. Everyone brought something to share, so we ate potluck plus some pizzas Saturday night. This was across the highway from “Starved Rock State Park”. Most of the family did some hiking. There were three different hikes finished on Saturday. The longest was 3-1/2 miles and quite treacherous. Even the 2-year-old and 5-year-old walked most of the way!
The weather was warm but nice. It was a fun weekend. Not everyone was able to go, but 35 made the trip.
The “big cabin” was unique in that it had animals mounted on the wall and standing around. There was a lion, wild boar, alligator, giraffe, and many species of “deer”, caribou, and buffalo! There was also a pool table. There seemed to be a game going most of the time.
Those able to attend were Jay and Ellen Bardole of Vincennes IN, Bill and Heidi Fornes, Margaret and Jane of West Layfayette, IN, Dan and Heather Hubert, Amanda, and Janelle of Dexter. MI, Roy and Phyllis Bardole, Tim and Lori Bardole and Gabe and Kevin and Mary Hick, all of Rippey, Pete and Yvette Bardole, Arthur, Avery, and Aden of Jefferson, Cassie Bardole and Ozzie of Jefferson, Schyler and Lauren Bardole and Milo Churdan, Donald and Alice Bardole of Williamsburg, and Haven, Henry and Charlie Hick of Pella. Jason and Allison Bardole, Levi, Kate,and Chase, of Wauwatosa, WI, spent the day Saturday.
We spent some time Saturday telling stories of Paul and Mary so that the younger cousins would know something about their heritage. Jay and Ellen brought a couple science experiments that the younger crowd enjoyed. Mary Ann brought copies of old home movies for the other brothers to have. We watched some of them Friday night.
We all headed for home Sunday morning. Pete, Yvette, and family headed to Chicago for a three day vacation.
It was a wonderful weekend enjoyed by all. Hopefully another time we can have more go or have the others come back to the farm. – submitted by Phyllis Bardole

Jean Borgeson joined Linda Burk of Minburn for breakfast on Friday. The longtime friends enjoyed catching up in person, rather than the quick E-mail notes and sightings on Facebook. Linda and Jim had been cleaning and she presented Jean with some historical stuff of Rippey and Greene County that was found in his grandfather’s safe a long time ago. Knowing Jean’s interest, it found a good home, at least for a while.
